পৃথিবীর আদিমতম পেশার একটি জেলে পেশা। নদী, নৌকা, জাল আর জেলে যেন এক সুতোয় গাঁথা।
মাছ ধরে আর বিক্রি করে তাদের জীবন চলে। নদীকে কেন্দ্র করেই জেলেদের জীবন-যাপন। পদ্মা নদীর পাড়ে তাই গড়ে উঠেছে জেলে গ্রামগুলো। মুন্সীগঞ্জের বাগড়া ও ভাগ্যকুলের দুটি হিন্দু জেলে গ্রামে এই ছবিগুলো তোলা। এই গ্রামের জেলেরা প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মে এই পেশায় আছেন। ছবিতে উঠে এসেছে তাদের দৈনন্দিন, সামাজিক, ধর্মীয় ও সাংস্কৃতিক জীবনযাপন।
সারা বছর ধরেই চলে জেলেদের মাছ ধরা। ইলিশ, পাঙ্গাস, চিতল, আইড়, বোয়াল, পাবদার মত বড় মাছ আর পুঁটি, ট্যাংরা, বাইলা, কাচকি, বাটা, পোয়া, চিংড়ি ধরা হয়। এসব মাছ ধরতে বিভিন্ন রকমের ফাঁদ,কোচ, ছিপ, টানা বড়শি, টানা জাল, বেড় জাল, ঝাকি জাল, ভেসাল জাল ব্যবহার করা হয়।
যাদের নৌকা আর জাল আছে তারা এখানে অবস্থাপন্ন আর অন্যরা তাদের অধীনস্থ। ঝড়-বৃষ্টি মাথায় নিয়ে প্রতিদিন বের হতে হয় তাদের। ভাগ্যে মাছ উঠলে ভালো, না হলে সংসার চালানো কঠিন হয়ে পড়ে।
দিন দিন দূষণ,দখল আর বাধ নির্মাণে চর পড়ে হারিয়ে যাচ্ছে নদী, কমে যাচ্ছে মাছ ও মাছ ধরার স্থান। অনিশ্চয়তার এই পেশা ছেড়ে অন্য পেশায় গেছেন তাই অনেকেই, অনেকে পাড়ি দিয়েছেন বিদেশে। কিন্তু অনেকেই রয়ে গেছেন পুরনো পেশায় আর কোন উপায় নেই বলে বা মুক্ত জীবনের টানে।
নদীর ভাঙ্গনে হারিয়ে গেছে অনেক জেলে গ্রাম। এক সময় হয়তো এই গ্রাম এই পেশা হারিয়ে যাবে প্রযুক্তি ও সময়ের অতলে। তখন এই ছবিগুলো তার স্মৃতি হয়ে থাকবে।
Fishing is one of the oldest professions in the human civilization. The river, the boat, the net, and the fisherman are all tied in a single thread.
Fishermen’s livelihood depends on catching and selling fish. Throughout generations, fishermen have built hundreds of fishing villages along the banks of the Padma river, creating a vibrant community that relies on the river for their livelihood. These pictures were taken in two fishing villages of Bagra and Bhagyakul in Munshiganj, where the majority of the families are from the Hindu religion. The fishermen have been practicing this profession for generation. The picture shows their daily, social, religious, and cultural life.
Fishing goes on throughout the year in this river. Big fish like Hilsa, Pangas, Chital, Boal, Pabda and small fishes like Puti, Tangra, Baila, Kachki, Bata, Poa, Chingri are also found in the Padma. To catch these fish, different types of traps, nets, trawl nets, fence nets, jhaki nets, etc. are used.
Some of the fishermen are comparatively wealthy, own boats and nets, and get assistance or hire fellow needy fishermen in the fishing community. They have to go out every day in rain and storm. If they are not lucky enough to get fish any day, they tend to be starving for the day, along with their family.
Day by day, rivers are disappearing due to pollution, encroachment and construction of dams, reducing fish and fishing areas. Many people have thus left this profession of uncertainty, many have moved abroad. But many still remain in the old profession because there is no other way or maybe this is the only life where they get the taste of freedom.
Many fishing villages have been destroyed due to river erosion. Someday this village and this profession might also be lost in the abyss of technology and time. Then these pictures will be witness and memory to the livelihood of these fishermen of the mighty Padma.
